- Automaxx Face Clamp
I picked up the new face clamp from Kreg last week. I’ve been a big fan of the face clamp and how well it holds your pocket screw work. I use it for lots of jobs in the shop, not just pocket hole joinery. When I heard that there was a new clamp that automatically adjust to different stock thickness I was baffled. Surely it would compromise some aspect of the original. I put it right to work as soon as I got home and I’m happy to report that it works great. It appears that Kreg is using some technology borrowed from the Bessey auto adjust toggle clamp. The only adjustment you need to make is for how much pressure you want the clamp to have once its engaged. You simply spin the small screw between the handles to set. As you can see in the picture the clamp handles spread out wider on the new clamp then on the original. This does make it a bit more awkward to close the clamp with one hand but I’m finding that I’ve adapted to it. Releasing the old face clamp always causes just a bit hesitation from the force as the clamp springs open, especially if you have it set for maximum pressure. I don’t find that its noticeable as much on the new face clamp. The rubber handles also add some comfort when in use.
